Why we teach PSHE
We want all of our children to be healthy, safe and prepared for life. By the time children leave Cliffdale they will have increased their awareness, independence and co-operation so they can begin to take care of themselves, access their community and have healthy relationships.
How we teach PSHE
PSHE is implemented through discreet PSHE lessons, daily routines and highly personalised opportunities to develop skills.
- Safety (for example transitioning with independence, road safety, stranger danger, online safety, travel skills and community behaviour developed through trips offsite)
- People and relationships (for example Team Time, assemblies, playtime, structured play opportunities and engagement with others)
- Feelings and emotions (for example Zones of Regulation, exposure to different experiences, self-regulation, recognising emotions, learning to cope with changes and working alongside others)
- Health and hygiene (for example handwashing, brushing teeth, toileting, healthy lifestyles and personal care including medication / first aid)
- My body (for example developing a sense of self, dressing skills, personal care, puberty and body parts)
What difference PSHE makes to our children
- To build relationships at school, home and in the community which are healthy and meaningful
- To increase their independence when transitioning and experiencing new environments
- To have increased confidence and independence in self-care skills
- To regulate their emotions and express their feelings appropriately
- To communicate a preference, feeling or choice with a range of people
- To be prepared for the next stage of education
