Cliffdale Primary School

Why we teach History

At Cliffdale we want to inspire our children to be excited about exploring the world around them using all their senses. We aim to encourage children to begin to notice and comment on what they see. We want to enable our children to increase their understanding of differences and similarities around them; in people and objects in their homes, familiar places and in the wider world beyond

How we teach History

History is taught through:

  • Our termly breadth and balance topic curriculum to ensure that it is engaging and exciting that it is relatable and accessible to all our children and their needs.
  • Using simple straightforward terminology such as past and present, now and next, same and different, today and tomorrow.
  • Using a range of visuals to help develop communication for all pupils.
  • Giving pupils access to stimulating, relevant and engaging resources and equipment.
  • Including opportunities to visit different places and relevant visitors

Children regularly use now and next schedules or relevant engaging equipment to understand turn taking with their peers. They will have opportunities to sequence stories. Practical activities involving exploring objects, photos and symbols that are based around the children's interests means that learning opportunities are maximised. For example, pupils have explored and identified differences in vehicles from the past and present, looked at and used different telephones and looked at photos of them and their families.

What difference it makes

Our history activities provide our children with the opportunity to learn relevant things for each individual. In addition, new opportunities to participate in a wide range of experiences and activities. These will support children to build confidence and relationships, encourage exploration and increased vocabulary and engagement in the world around them.
