In Upper School the children have enjoyed our first topic “Survival of the Fittest” so much they decided to use our fabulous finish day to showcase our favourite parts of the topic:

Giraffe class used our Topic finale day to plan and build our own small obstacle course. We started by choosing which three pieces of PE equipment we wanted to use before going into the hall to build them. Pupils also learnt to use symbols to recall some of the events we took part in across the term and create our own story book in writing. Giraffe pupils challenged each other to fitness test in the classroom – ‘how many jumps in 30 sec on the trampet?’ as well as use instruction on how to make a refreshing glass of squash. We took some of our obstacle plans to share in the upper school assembly and let our friends in other classes have a go. What a brilliant day!

In Tiger class we have loved creating portraits in the style of famous artists. We chose to use what we learnt to create portraits of Ashley, Louise and Nicola. Louise’s portrait was made in the style of Picasso and we chose bright colours to reflect her personality. For Nicola we chose Paul Klee as out artist. We painted an abstract image in shades of green. Finally for Ashley we made a collage in the style of Laura Benjamin – a modern artist who creates her work using sweet wrappers. We really enjoyed showing these in assembly and letting our friends guess who was who!

In Lion class we shared a dramatic representation of the story “Don’t Hog the Hedge”. We all wore masks and acted out the story in front of our friends. Everyone was so impressed with how much we knew about woodland animals and hibernation. We were so clear using our words to share the story, the whole of Upper School was joining in by the end.

Part of our topic has been learning to work as part of a team. Gorilla and Crocodile classes chose to work together to make a film giving instructions about how to survive a night in the wild. They had the whole of Upper School in hysterics, especially when watching them try to put the pop up tents back in their bags – definitely a two person job!!

Zebra class loved finding out about healthy eating. We chose to create and share fruit kebabs for our fabulous finish. We practised our chopping and cutting before adding to skewers in a pattern. Mostly however, we loved eating what we made!

Finally in Rhino class we shared our “bug hotels”. Each of us made our own hotel which we placed in the environmental area to help look after the minibeasts and provide them with shelter. We loved going around the hall and showing our designs to our friends.

What a fabulous day was had by all!!
