This year we will be learning about and celebrating five special religious days or events. The first of the five is a Muslim festival that celebrates the birth of Muhammed.
We learn about the different festivals through a concept. Upper School learnt about Mawlid through the concept ‘forgiveness’ and Lower School learnt about this festival through the concept ‘kindness.’
Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammed was a very kind and loving man and spread messages of peace and love. We learnt about the story of when Muhammed was born and how some parts of the story are similar to the Nativity story. An angel appeared, but unlike the Christmas story, a Bird of Paradise appeared in the birth story of Muhammed.
We role played this story as we learnt about the different characters that featured at the time of Muhammed’s birth. We learnt that Muhammed never went to school and that when he was a grown man he was a shepherd and like to spend time on his own.
To celebrate this festival we explored it through our senses. We participated in creative activities like making birds of paradise, angels, doves, shepherds and sheep. We tasted different foods associated with this festival, including special sweets which we made. Some classes made a birthday card for Muhammed and celebrated with a cake!
We listened to stories about kindness because Prophet Muhammed taught that kindness was very important and that we should be kind to everybody.
