The second religious festival that we learnt about this term was Advent; it is celebrated by Christians as they look forward to the arrival of Christmas and the time when they believe that Jesus was born.
Upper School learnt about Advent through the concept ‘readiness’ and Lower School learnt about Advent through the concept of ‘anticipation or excitement’.
We learnt how to make Christingles using oranges, cocktails sticks, red ribbon, sweets and candles. Through this activity we learnt that Christians believe that God made the world and sent his son Jesus to help people on Earth. The red ribbon wrapped around the middle of the orange represents God’s love for the world.
We learnt about Jesus’ birthday and what we needed to do to prepare for Christmas Day. Creative activities included making prints of Christmas Trees and decorating them in a variety of ways.
We made advent wreaths and were introduced to words like ‘hope’, ‘faith’, ‘joy’, ‘peace’ and ‘love’. All these words, Christians believe, are associated with Christianity, God and Jesus.
