At Cliffdale Primary Academy the teaching and learning of MFL is focused on increasing the children’s awareness of different cultures and languages through experiential learning. This will promote the children’s curiosity of the world. This year we have decided to broaden our curriculum and learn about China and the language Mandarin.
During our first MFL days the children began the day by answering the question “Where is China?” Using maps and atlases classes located China and famous Chinese cities such as Beijing and Shanghai. We also looked at the Chinese flag and carefully copied the design to create our own.
In English and Maths lessons the focus was on looking at Chinese characters and how they are different from the letters and numbers we use. We learnt how to recognise Chinese numbers and how to count to 10 in Mandarin. We even practiced writing them, although they were very tricky! Then we learnt that writing in Mandarin goes down the page! We created scrolls with our names using ink or symbols.
We started the second day by learning facts about Giant Pandas. Each class then had the opportunity to create some panda themed art work using paint and collage. The children especially enjoyed learning different techniques such as paper ripping.
Finally everyone built their own “Great Wall of Cliffdale” using Lego to reproduce the Great Wall of China. Each class competed to see whose wall was the longest. The winner was Lion class whose wall was over 2 metres long!
Upper School can’t wait until the Spring Term when we will be learning all about Chinese New Year and celebrating in style with a Chinese banquet!!
