Ahoy me hearties!
The shipmates in Early Years enjoyed an exciting launch to the new topic “Over the Deep, Blue Sea” with a pirate themed topic launch day.
The children found a treasure map hidden in their classrooms which led them to a series of clues in the environmental area. The trainee pirates followed the visual instructions on the clues which led them to the treasure – chocolate coins.
In class there were a series of activities for each pirate to complete: communicating requests to dress the pirate, following instructions to create feathered parrots and creating their own treasure maps using early mark making skills.
In the outdoor classrooms the brave pirates explored real fish using all of their senses. They were fascinated by the eyes, fins and scales and commented on what they observed using verbal language and symbols.
Whilst exploring the large, wooden pirate ship children were encouraged to follow sequential numbers to ‘walk the plank’. Inside the ship they found treasure to sort, match and count.
The pirates travelled to the hall and each class was transported to an under the sea world where they travelled into the shark’s mouth and crawled through a series of tunnels to reach the yellow submarine.
The Early Years pirates are now very excited to find out more about the new topic and will be spending the term learning about mermaids, sea creatures, boats and of course completing their training to become fully fledged pirates. Aaaarhh!!
