Diwali

Diwali

Our whole school assembly this week was celebrating the Hindu festival of ‘Diwali’.

Our whole school assembly this week was celebrating the Hindu festival of ‘Diwali’.

The Diwali assembly was an opportunity to experience some of the celebrations that happen during the festival.  We learnt that Diwali is a festival of light and that during Diwali, Hindu people celebrate good things.  They wear their best clothes for the festival, decorate their houses with diva lamps, sing and dance and give each other presents.  They also have special food for the celebration and often finish it off by sharing special sweets.

During the assembly some children had the chance to try on some typical Hindu clothing and everyone had a dance to some Indian pop music!

The whole school sat together and everyone held a candle and sang together a special ‘Diva Lamp’ song.  Lots of children placed their candle in the ‘river’ that ran down the centre of the hall and some wanted to say a prayer as they did so.

Our assembly finished with more dancing and lots of coloured lights as we celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights.
